Type Locality and Naming

Morondava Basin (Madagascar). Named for the Sakoa region in southwestern Madagascar. It constitutes the basal Karoo-equivalent depositional sequence within the Malagasy rift basins.

Lithology and Thickness

The Sakoa Gr represents a diverse basal lithostratigraphic succession. As illustrated in regional stratigraphic correlations, it commences with basal glacial beds (tillites/diamictites), which are succeeded by black shales, coal beds, lower red beds, and finally a marine limestone unit known as the Vohitoila Limestone.

Lower contact

Unconformably overlies the ancient Precambrian basement rocks

Unconformably overlain by the terrestrial fluvio-lacustrine rocks of the Lower Sakamena Gr.
